Kern COG Displays 2011 Art Contest Winners at City Locations Throughout the County January 11, 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Organization: Kern Council of Governments Kern Council of Governments (Kern COG) is proud to display the winning entries of its 2011 Art Contest throughout the county. For the second consecutive year, Kern COG and the Arts Council of Kern hosted an art contest whose theme was centered around transportation. In 2011, that theme was Passenger Rail – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Local artists were invited to submit renderings of the history of passenger rail to its future. Submissions were accepted in graphic art, digital art, painting, photography, and sculpture. Among the numerous entries, judges chose three local winners. Best in Show went to Katherine Young-Beck. Her submission, "Passenger Rail Evolution," stood out with its elegant colors and detail. Young-Beck brought a three-dimensional look to her piece not only in the strokes used for each individual detail, but also with the addition of an actual railroad spike. First place in Digital Art was awarded to Scott McDonald, for his submission "Waiting to Catch the 714". McDonald's digital rendering of an original photomontage captured the dynamics of rail travel through space and time. First place in Sketch Art went to Greg Hauss. A long-time artist, Greg took elements that seemed central, then assembled and reassembled them until his work was done. The result was a wonderful rendering of passenger rail over the past 150 years. Sponsored prizes of $1,000 and $500 were awarded to the recipients along with award certificates. The winning artworks will be showcased in public buildings throughout Kern County in 2012, used at Kern COG outreach events and posted on the agency's website at www.kerncog.org. The winning artwork will be on display at each of the city offices noted on the following schedule.
