The California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) is a product of the California Department of Fish and Game's Habitat Conservation Division, Wildlife Habitat Data Analysis Branch (WHDAB). The CNDDB is both a manual and computerized library of the status and locations of California's rare species and natural community types. The CNDDB includes in its inventory all federally and state listed plants and animals, all species that are candidates for listing, all species of special concern, and those species that are considered "sensitive" by government agencies and the conservation community. The computerized information is available for a fee in hardcopy and digital forms. The CNDDB is a dynamic system with information continually being added and upgraded. The CNDDB contains over 39,000 locational records for over 2,000 elements.
			<purpose>To provide the most current information and to track the location and condition of California's many species of rare and sensitive plants, animals, and natural communities.</purpose>
			<supplinf>We work very hard to keep the CNDDB as current and up to date as possible given our capabilities and resources. However, we cannot and do not portray the CNDDB as an exhaustive and comprehensive inventory of rare species and natural communities. Field verification for the absence and presence of sensitive species will always be an important obligation of our customers. Likewise, your contribution of data to the CNDDB is equally important to the maintenance of the CNDDB.

		<accconst>Limited to subscribers</accconst>
		<useconst>The CNDDB is offered on a yearly subscription basis; it includes an initial copy of RareFind 2 and an update sent six months later. We offer the entire statewide dataset along with the GIS shapefile for use in many popular GIS software packages. All are available to subscribers on CD. Commercial, Non-profit and Government rate of $300 for the initial subscription year and $200 for subsequent renewal years. However, should the subscription lapse 2 months or more from the established anniversary month (i.e., month of initial subscription), subscription will commence again at the initial start-up rate of $300.
Organizations can make as many copies of the data and application as necessary for their internal use but cannot make copies for distribution outside of their organization.</useconst>

				<attrlabl>PARTS</attrlabl>
				<attrdef>
Parts reports the number of components (rather than polygons) that make
up each geographic location or FCODE. Usually a FCODE is composed of one
RING. In some cases, however, the FCODE may be composed of a complex of
disjunct parts (a vernal pool complex, for example). In these cases
PARTS reports the number of components contained in the complex. An
element occurrence at this FCODE will still be represented by a single
REGION and a single EONDX.
</attrdef>
				<attrdefs>\\Metadata\field_names.htm</attrdefs>
				<attrdomv></attrdomv>
			</attr>
			<attr>
				<attrlabl>FCODE</attrlabl>
				<attrdef>
Feature Code/Map Index. Uniquely identifies a geographic location. This
location may consist of several unconnected features contained in a
complex. More than one element occurrence may occur at a given FCODE,
creating a situation known as a "multiple". For this reason, FCODE is
NOT unique for each record. Although FCODE is assigned sequentially,
gaps may appear as records are merged or updated.
</attrdef>

			</attr>
			<attr>
				<attrlabl>EONDX</attrlabl>
				<attrdef>
Element Occurrence Index. An integer primary key (unique for each
record) used as a relate item for ARC/INFO relates. Although EONDX is
assigned sequentially, gaps may appear as records are merged or updated.

			<attr>
				<attrlabl>AVLCODE</attrlabl>
				<attrdef>
A code used for cartographic symbolization of the EO features contained
in the GIS shapefile data set. AVLCODE is actually concatenation of
three datafields -- ELTYPE_CODE, ACC_CLASS and EOCOUNT. Because of this,
the AVLCODE field captures three fields of information in a single code
for purposes of assigning map symbols. With AVLCODE, the first place is
from ELTYPE_CODE, the second and third places are from ACC_CLASS, and
the last two places are from EOCOUNT. ELTYPE_CODE indicates the type of
element (plant, animal, terrestrial community or aquatic community),
ACC_CLASS indicates the accuracy class and EOCOUNT the number of
occurrences at a single mapped location (FCODE). For example, AVLCODE
10101 (1 01 01) indicates a Plant (ELCODE_CODE = 1), with an accuracy
class of 1 (ACC_CLASS = 01) with only one occurrence at that location
(EOCOUNT = 01). AVLCODE 20812 indicates an animal occurrence, with an
accuracy class of 8 and a shared spatial location with eleven other
occurrences (MUTIPLE). Also see LUCODE.

			<attr>
				<attrlabl>ELMCODE</attrlabl>
				<attrdef>
Element code. A ten-character (ten-byte) code assigned to each element
by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for data management purposes. These
codes are common to all Natural Heritage Programs within the United
States and allow efficient inter-jurisdictional communication. An
outline of the upper levels of classifications is presented below.
Complete coding information is contained in the Natural Heritage Program
Operations Manual TNC, Arlington, Virginia, April 1982, revised June
1988. An example code follows the outline.

			<attr>
				<attrlabl>OCCNUMBER</attrlabl>
				<attrdef>
Element Occurrence Number. The occurrence number which uniquely
identifies a particular instance of a species or community. Occurrence
numbers are assigned sequentially as the occurrence is mapped. The first
instance mapped for an element is number 1, the eighteenth location is
number 18, etc. There may be gaps in the number sequence as occurrences
are combined. Taken together, ELMCODE and OCCNUMBER form a primary key
for some tables in the CNDDB.

				<attrlabl>KEYQUAD</attrlabl>
				<attrdef>
Key Quad. The USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle map which contains the centrum
of this occurrence. This code is expressed as a modified USGS code
consisting of one degree blocks sub-divided into sixty-four 7.5 minute
maps. The one degree block is referenced by the latitude and longitude
of its southeast corner (ie: 38121). Individual maps within the block
are referenced by an alpha-numeric code. This code originates at the
same southeast corner as the one degree block and runs numerically east
to west, and alphabetically south to north. This creates a grid allowing
maps to be coded by the intersection of these axis (ie: B5). A complete
map code would be 38121B5. The CNDDB QUADCODE converts this value to an
integer by replacing the alpha character with a numeric equivalent (ie:
A = 1, H = 8). This renders the KEYQUAD code for the above example
3812125.
