The wilderness data set illustrates the boundaries of BLM wilderness
created by the Desert Protection Act. The data set has been updated as
legals for the boundaries have become available. The data was created by
transferring an interpretation of legislative intent to 7.5' USGS quad,
and then digitizing the quad. As legals have become available the
boundaries have been modified to reflect both the feature which was used
to define the boundary, and the source of the arc that was used.
The data set now includes all Federal Wilderness in CA, and most State
Wilderness.
The data set is used to illustrate BLM wilderness in the CA Desert, and
all wilderness throughout CA, and in inventoring various resource
management and administrative features as necessary. The data set may also
be used in analysis of natural resource features such as protection of
habitat, etc.
The source of information in this data set is as follows: The Desert
Protection Act, and legislative committee mark up maps, USGS 7.5' quad
maps, USGS 1:100,000 DLG data, BLM Geog. Coordinate Database (GCDB) data,
USGS 7.5' DRG data. Initial interpretation of the legislative intent
resulted in preliminary boundaries. Since then, legal descriptions were
created by cadastral surveryors, and are now in the process of Field
Office review. As the legal descriptions become available, they are
incorporated into the wilderness boundary data set. Non-BLM wilderness has
been obtained from the managing Agency.

The data is estimated to be 99% accurate. The data have been checked with
check plots, and have been thoroughly scruitinized during the many
revisions of the data set as legals have become available.
Extrodinary care has been taken in selection of the coordinate sources
during updates of this data set. The data has been carefully constructed
to be sure that coincident features are coincident. Defining feature and
coordinate source are carefully docuemented at the feature level in the
coverage.aat file.

The data was interpreted from the legislative intent and transferred to
7.5' USGS quads. The data was digitized and offered for Field Office
review. Surveyors created legal descriptions from the legislative
intent. These are now out for Field Office review. As the legal
descriptions become available, they have been incorporated into the
data.

The coverage.aat user defined items are COORD_SOURCE, DEF_FEATURE,
OFFSET_FEET, OFFSET_METER, BOUNDARY, CHERRY_STEM. COORD_SOURCE is for
feature level metadata and provides the source of the digital data that
the arc was created from. DEF_ FEATURE provides the physical feature upon
which the boundary is determined (such as road, stream, plss, etc).
OFFSET_FEET and OFFSET_METER provide numeric values for how far the
boundary is set away from a feature.
The coverage.pat has two user defined items: WLD_ID and INITIAL_ADJ.
WLD_ID is a BLM wilderness program internal identification number assigned
to the wilderness area. INITIAL_ADJ is a switch that indicates whether or
not the wilderness boundary has been adjusted to a legal description. A
value of "Y" indicates that the boundary has been adjusted to a legal
description. No value indicates that no adjustment has taken place. Values
for WLD_ID are as follows:
