The PAMP (Principal Areas of Mine Pollution) data set is a compilation of 2,422 mining operations and their potential water-quality problems. This information was originally compiled in 1972 by the Division of Mines and Geology for the State Water Resources Control Board. It was published in a series of volumes of tabular data. The data set includes operations where production exceeded $100,000 or where other factors indicated a high potential for pollution.
			<purpose>
The PAMP data set was converted to a digital format by the Office of Mine Reclamation to provide a digital data set describing abandoned mines that may have pollution problems. This data set is not intended to be a statement of fact that any of the listed sites do have such problems. Instead, it provides a starting point for locating and investigating abandoned mines in order to make such determinations.
It is a known fact that the reported coordinates for the mines in this data set often have poor spatial accuracy. Because of this, additional information sources should be consulted in order to accurately locate the sites.

The attributes of the data set have been transcribed from the original printed format. Coordinates were given in Decimal Minutes, so an additional field containing a conversion to decimal degrees waw created.
Due to field length limitations imposed by the database, some of the data in some of the fields is truncated. One will encounter these truncated fields from time to time where a word abrubtly ends. There is no intention to revist and remedy the data affected by this.
</attraccr>
		</attracc>
		<logic>The original data source was comprised of tabular data with fairly free form text entries under each of these fields. No effort was made to "normalize" this information, and it was input verbatim.</logic>
		<complete>The original data set was compiled based on mines that had greater than $100,000 of production or that had other factors indicating a potential pollution problem. There is no information about whether any attempt was made to normalize the dollar figures used in the selection criteria or what the additional selection criteria were. It is not possible to determine the completeness of the data, and it is likely there were many ommissions of mines that may have pollution problems but did not meet the selection criteria.</complete>

			<horizpa>
				<horizpar>Coordinates in the original data set were given in degrees and decimal minutes with up to two decimal places. Anecdotal spatial accuracy assessments indicate the data is generally of poor spatial accuracy, and is often off by as much as 1000 meters. It is likely that the original data set was compiled using reported USPLSS coordinates, and therefore may represent a center of a section or a center of a quarter section. However, because the USPLSS system has been adjusted over the years, transcription of very old information to coordinates using more recent maps likely introduced another source of error. Additionally, typing errors have been discovered and corrected for a few coordinates where the error was obvious, such as the transposition resulting in 112 for a longitude coordinate that should have been 121. Non-obvious errors were entered as reported in the original document.</horizpar>
